For all the lucky new grandparents welcoming a little one into their home, I’ve put together a practical shopping list to make visits easier, safer, and more fun.

So, what’s on the list?

  • The basics. A foldable crib or pack-and-play is essential. We especially love Nuna’s version—it’s hands-down the easiest one to set up and take down.

  • Playtime helpers. A sturdy play mat and a playpen go a long way in keeping baby safe while giving you a breather from the grandparent hover.

  • Mealtime must-have. A high chair may feel optional at first, but trust us—it’s worth investing in a Tripp Trapp. Unlike budget options, it grows with your grandchild from babyhood through preschool (and beyond).

  • Everyday extras. Keep a few essentials—like towels, onesies, and board books—on hand for unexpected messes and cozy moments.

  • Safety first. From thermometers and first aid kits to drawer locks and anti-tip furniture straps, a few small steps make a big difference in peace of mind.

We hope this list helps you feel prepared and excited to host your grandbaby. What would you add? Share your ideas—we’ll update this list with suggestions from our community!

This pack and play is our number one choice, because it is so easy to set up and take down. So much that I frequently moved mine from room to room when my little guy was a baby.

When you need to go to the bathroom but you are a grandparent and follow baby around all day, all night

We love Wunderkids—their play mats are made in Korea, are the highest quality on the market.

A crinkle toy or a spinner are perfect “distractions” when baby is fussy or getting their diaper changes :)

Keep it simple, but take beat to refresh your memory about baby care basics

Don’t get caught without ...teething toys! And grab a few because there is nothing more fun for baby than throwing them on the ground!

Don’t forget all the safety gear (look at the full reference list above). These are great Gas, Co Detectors that also monitor room temp.
